My name is Kevin Kanehl, and I am a career Lieutenant/Paramedic for a combination fire department located in Southeastern, Michigan. Currently, I am schedule to graduate from Siena Heights University in May 2015 with a BA in Public Safety Studies. During my Human Resource Management (MGT 360) course, I was challenged with choosing a related social justice topic for my final research assignment. I became interested in the area of improving minority recruitment and hiring within public safety organizations. As community demographics change throughout the United States, I believe it will be imperative to match this change with a more diverse workforce in order to provide the highest quality of service possible. I would also like to provide a special thank you to Lieutenant Melissa Gardner who is in charge of recruitment for the Detroit Police Department (DPD). Lieutenant Gardner provided me with invaluable insight into the successful recruitment and hiring practices of the DPD.
